Presidency Statement on violence in the Gaza Strip

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., speaking in his European Union Presidency capacity, deplored this week's violence in Gaza and the threats of retaliation issued by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. He called on both sides to refrain from any action which would further inflame the situation. Instead, every effort should be made to begin implementing the steps set out in the Roadmap so as to satisfy the legitimate aspirations of both the Israeli and Palestinian people and bring peace and security to the region.
