CHRISTMAS OBSERVED AT UN HEADQUARTERS IN JERUSALEM

Bethlehem Church Service Filmed for First Time by UN Cameraman

(The following was received today at United Nations Headquarters

from the UN Press Officer in Jerusalem.)

A Christmas Party given by the military and civilian staff of the United Nations on Christmas Day united Jordan and Israeli representatives of the Mixed Armistice Commission in an informal social gathering at Government House in Jerusalem, United Nations' Palestine headquarters in the no-man's-land between the Arab and Jewish lines.

On Christmas Eve the military and civilian staff, together with the Jerusalem diplomatic corps, went to Bethlehem over the traditional road which had been opened to them on that occasion by Jordan and Israeli authorities.  (See Press Release PAL/545).  Midnight religious services at the Church of the Nativity were filmed by U.N. Cameraman Alfred Wagg who had been given permission by the authorities to produce for the Department of Public Information of the United Nations the first documentary motion pictures ever taken of the Christmas services inside the Church of the Nativity.
