UNRWA Commissioner-General expresses shock
and profound sadness at Gaza killings
UNRWA Commissioner General Karen Koning AbuZayd expressed shock and profound sadness at the killing of civilians, including women and children, on a beach in Gaza yesterday afternoon.
“I am extremely upset to learn of yet another senseless waste of innocent lives. I extend my heartfelt sorrow and condolences to the bereaved families”.
Konig AbuZayd welcomed Israeli Minister of Defence Amir Peretz’s response to halt the shelling of the Gaza Strip, and to investigate the tragedy to ensure accountability by those responsible.
UNRWA’s Commissioner-General also expressed concern that this announcement was followed immediately by a number of sonic booms, created by low-flying Israeli fighter jets rocking Gaza city during the night.
“Sonic booms cause great trauma to the population at large, and particularly to children. I sincerely hope this indiscriminate weapon will be banned by Minister Peretz”.
