Statements made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson

(excerpts)

(Paris, August 25, 2005)

France is concerned about the acts of violence which occurred in the night of Wednesday, August 24.

The deaths of five West Bank Palestinians and a young Israeli in Jerusalem must not compromise the positive dynamic created by the withdrawal from Gaza.

More than ever, the two parties must continue to show the restraint and political responsibility they have since the start of the withdrawal.

We are also expressing our concerns to the Israeli authorities in light of reports that 120 hectares of Palestinian land could be confiscated to construct a barrier around Maale Adumin.

This decision, which is contrary to international law, if confirmed could undermine the positive development resulting from the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

Q – Yesterday, an Israeli warship fired on a Lebanese fishing vessel, and two military jets violated Lebanese airspace. Today, a mortar shell landed on a chicken coop in the village of Margaliot in northern Israel. Do you have any comment?

We condemn the recent violations of the blue line which have occurred on both sides of the border.

While the withdrawal from Gaza raises new prospects for the region, it is the responsibility of everyone to do everything to preserve stability.
