The European Union strongly condemns the bombing that took place today in Beirut, killing former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri as well as other innocent civilians. The EU expresses its sorrow at this horrendous attack. It extends its condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the family of former Prime Minister Hariri as well as to the families of the other victims and to the wounded. Former Prime Minister Hariri shall be remembered for his efforts to rebuild Lebanon and for strengthening relations between Lebanon and the EU.

The bombing constitutes an attack on the democratic principles that form the foundation of the Lebanese Republic. The EU hopes that this attack will not be such as to affect the democratic process, including the holding of free and fair legislative elections.
