PRESS RELEASE

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov's Visit to Syria

1496-08-09-2006

As part of his trip to the Middle East, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov on September 7 visited Damascus. He was received by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and held talks with Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa and Minister of Foreign Affairs Walid Muallem.

The conversations helped thoroughly discuss the situation in the region and ways to overcome the dangerous tension there that carries with it a serious threat to international peace and security. Lavrov noted the importance of the full implementation by all parties of the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, called upon to achieve a long-term settlement to the Lebanon-Israel crisis. The readiness of the Syrian side to assist the process of the normalization of conditions was noted with satisfaction. There was expressed the common opinion that the present crisis is rooted in the unsettledness of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In this connection the necessity was stressed of coordinated efforts by the international community directed at resuming the peace process on all its tracks. Only a comprehensive settlement based on UNSC Resolutions 242, 338 and 1515, other relevant decisions of the international community, and the Madrid principles can ensure nonrecurrence of crises like this one, and the establishment of a lasting peace in the region.

The sides expressed a firm mutual striving to strengthen and develop Russian-Syrian cooperation in all fields on a mutually advantageous basis.
