Mikhail Kamynin, the Spokesman of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Answers a Question from RIA Novosti Regarding Arrests of Palestinian National Authority Legislative and Executive Officials
810-24-05-2007
Question: According to media reports, 33 Palestinians have been arrested by the Israelis in the West Bank recently, among them PNA Education Minister Naser al-Shaer, three members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, the mayors of Nablus and Kalkiliyah, and former Cabinet minister Abdel Rahman Zeidan. How could you comment on these developments?
Answer: Moscow has received with alarm news that arrests of PNA legislative and executive officials are being made in the Palestinian territories. We feel that these actions of Israel, as a minimum, do not help calm down the situation, restore order in the PNA territories or end the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation. It is hardly logical to demand of the Palestinian leadership an effective struggle against anti-Israeli actions and a reliable prevention of rocket attacks and simultaneously engage in destroying the power structures of the PNA.
