Turkey extends assistance to Palestinian refugees in Syria – UNRWA press release

Turkey Helps Bring Mobility to Disabled Palestinian Refugees in Syria

Syria — Thanks to a donation worth more than US$ 25,000, 100 Palestinian refugee families and disabled refugees will today receive prosthetic equipment and financial assistance for home modifications. An agreement signed today by the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) consolidated the cooperation between the two organisations.

Amneh Saqer, head of the UNRWA relief and social services programme, said: “TIKA’s generous donation will alleviate the suffering of disabled Palestinian refugees. It will also help in providing them with equal opportunities and integration into their community.”

TIKA Coordinator Metin Arislanba commended the work of UNRWA in improving living conditions for people living with disabilities in refugee camps, and is looking for further cooperation in the future. He also highlighted his country’s strong support for Palestinian refugees.

Roger Hearn, director of UNRWA affairs in Syria, thanked TIKA: “We are immensely grateful for their kind donation. It is a testament to the commitment of the international community in supporting Palestinian refugees, and we look forward to a long and valuable partnership.” He also thanked the Syrian government for their ongoing cooperation with UNRWA.

Established in 1992, TIKA provides development assistance foremost to developing countries where Turkish is spoken and countries that border Turkey. It also aims to improve cooperation through projects and programmes in economic, commercial, technical, social, cultural and educational arenas.

UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development agency providing access to education, health care, social support, micro-credit, and emergency relief to a population of over 4.7 million registered Palestinian refugees living in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. In Syria, UNRWA provides assistance to over 470,000 refugees.
