EUHR condemns Tel Aviv terrorist attack – EU press release/Non-UN document

Brussels, 26 February 2005

S079/05

Javier Solana,

EU High Representative for the CFSP,

condemns terrorist attack in Tel Aviv

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), strongly condemned today the terrorist attack committed last night in Tel Aviv.

"I strongly condemn the terrorist attack that took place last night in Tel Aviv. I want first of all to express my sympathy and my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Israeli authorities.

These actions are destined to sabotage the hope generated at the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting on 8 February and the positive and concrete steps taken by the Israelis and Palestinians with a view to re-establishing confidence between the two parties.

I call on the Palestinian Authority to condemn this attack and terrorism without any reservations, to take all the necessary measures to prevent these acts from reproducing and to neutralise the individuals and groups who do not halt terrorist operations. I urge the Palestinian Authority to arrest and judge those responsible for this attack and to unconditionally cooperate with Israel to assure security.

I call upon Israel and the Palestinian Authority not to plunge into the game of the terrorists, to react in manner that does not jeopardize the progress made in last weeks and to reaffirm their engagements made in Sharm el-Sheikh.

I urge the countries in the region to use their influence to cease all support to armed Palestinian opposition groups."
