Farewell and Welcome to TIPH observers
With a formal ceremony at the TIPH base in Hebron the mission recently bade farewell to a group of highly experienced observers and good colleagues.
At the same time, in early August, 14 new TIPH observers arrived in the city, some of them new to the area and the TIPH while others have been here before. The newcomers attended the weeklong introduction course, preparing them for their duties.
— My ambition is to contribute in helping the parties improve the conditions for the inhabitants of Hebron. Also, I hope to learn more about the area and get a better understanding of the development here. It is one thing to read about an issue and quite another to see it yourself, says Marco Rovaldi, the new Deputy Head of Operations.
During the introduction course, the new TIPH observers were briefed about the TIPH mandate, the history of Hebron and current developments in the city. Moreover, they receive lectures on the legal aspects of the TIPH's work, human rights and international humanitarian law, in addition to gender mainstreaming issues, cultural codes and first aid lessons. The incoming TIPH members are also briefed by the Palestinian Police Forces and the Israeli District Civil Liaison Office (DCL) in Hebron about their work and cooperation with TIPH.
