Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh – Egyptian State Information Service press release/Non-UN document

Egypt calls for holding a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh

President Hosni Mubarak called for holding a four-way summit in Sharm el-Sheikh mid next week with the participation of Jordanian King Abdallah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit.

In statements to diplomatic editors Thursday 21/6/2007, Abul-Gheit said that the summit is meant to improve Palestinian-Israeli relations in order to secure a proper climate for re-launching the peace process.

Abul-Gheit voiced hope that the summit would open the door for bringing the Palestinian and Israeli sides back to the negotiating table.

Answering a question whether the Palestinian factions will abide by what the summit reaches, he said that when the talk takes place between chairman of the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Prime Minister, all factions should adhere to any agreement to be reached between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Commenting on Abbas's address Wednesday 20/6/2007, Abul-Gheit said that it reflected his resolve to realize his people's hope to establish an independent Palestinian state. He noted that Egypt held contacts with regard to the summit during the past few days, adding that all parties were adamant to render the get-together successful.
