SECRETARY-GENERAL URGES PALESTINIAN UNITY IN FRAMEWORK OF QUARTET POSITION,
ARAB PEACE INITIATIVE COMMITMENT
The following statement was issued on 3 May by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General has sent the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, to Cairo for the marking tomorrow of the Palestinian unity agreement. Bearing in mind Security Council resolutions 1850 (2008) and 1860 (2009), the Secretary-General has continually supported efforts for unity, and the work of Egypt and President [Mahmoud] Abbas in this regard. He wishes to see unity in the framework of the positions of the Quartet and the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Arab Peace Initiative. The Secretary-General therefore strongly appeals to all Palestinian parties to commit to these principles.
