Japan donates $510,000 to UNRWA for medical equipment and training Beirut –The government of Japan has donated $510,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Lebanon.
The donation, first announced in December 2005, provides for the purchase of eight ultrasound machines, seven automated chemistry analyzers, and seven hematology cell counters costing $440,000. It also includes specialized training for UNRWA’s medical staff in the amount of $70,000.
This generous assistance will enable UNRWA to replace outdated medical equipment at various health centers and to introduce new equipment at others, thereby contributing significantly to the improvement of Mother and Child healthcare services provided for Palestine refugees in Lebanon.
Japan has a history of strong support for UNRWA and the Palestine refugees, especially in the important fields of health and education. In addition to Japan’s overall contribution to UNRWA’s General Fund Budget, in 2005 it contributed $400,000 for the construction of 24 classrooms and $100,000 towards university scholarships for female students. Thanks to this donation, UNRWA was able to grant full scholarships to seven students to pursue degree programs in biology, biochemistry, mathematics, and business administration.
