OFFICIAL STATEMENT 197

The Situation in the Middle East

Spain declares its concern about the situation developing
in the south of Israel and Gaza, and calls for a halt to all attacks.

08/07/2014

The Government of Spain condemns the launching of missiles, which may lead to an escalation that will benefit nobody. For this reason, it considers it to be of fundamental importance that all parties involved act with restraint and caution. A large-scale attack against the Gaza Strip would undoubtedly mean an enormous risk for Palestinian civilians.

Extremist violence, whatever its origins may be, should be purposefully opposed by the Israeli and Palestinian authorities.

The Government of Spain calls for caution and responsibility from all parties involved, and their international partners, in order to return to the negotiating table. Without a negotiated solution based on two states, Palestine and Israel, the risk of recurring cycles of violence and confrontation will not disappear. In a region convulsed by the current situation in Syria and Iraq, it is more important than ever to resume peace conversations on what is still a central conflict of vital importance for the peace and prosperity of the whole Middle East region.
