Kuwait Red Crescent Donates to Poorest Gaza Refugees
Amman — The Kuwait Red Crescent Society has generously donated US$ 250,000 towards meeting the needs of 4,700 abjectly poor Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip. The contribution will be used to purchase basic food items such as flour, sugar, rice, milk, and cooking oil under UNRWA’s social safety-net programme.
Welcoming the news, UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi said: “This donation comes at an important time and will feed thousands of refugees, many of whom are still suffering the effects of continuing restrictions on imports and exports. Despite the recent and very welcome Egyptian relaxation of border controls, ordinary economic life in the Gaza Strip continues to be impeded due to years of closure and blockade and as a result many Gazan families must turn to UNRWA for food aid just to survive.
“This contribution from the Kuwait Red Crescent Society will help alleviate the suffering of these families, who are among the most vulnerable that UNRWA serves, and we are grateful to the Kuwait Red Crescent for its regular and generous support.”
The Kuwait Red Crescent is one of UNRWA’s most important regional partners, primarily funding interventions in food and cash assistance. In 2010 the Kuwait Red Crescent contributed almost US$ 350,000 towards UNRWA projects and emergency programmes.
