UN human rights chief condemns West Bank attacks against Israelis
GENEVA –The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Thursday strongly condemned the recent armed attacks against Israelis in the occupied Palestinian territory, responsibility for which has been claimed by Hamas. Four people were shot dead in the West Bank on Tuesday – one of them reportedly a pregnant woman – and another two people were wounded there on Wednesday.
The High Commissioner joined UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon and his Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry in calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
“I strongly condemn these attacks, which as well as being abhorrent in themselves, also appear to be aimed at undermining the current round of peace talks,” Pillay said. The High Commissioner also pointed out that the individuals responsible for these attacks “can be held accountable under international criminal law.”
