New momentum in the Middle East

Steinmeier also held talks on the Middle East. With representatives of a number of Jewish organizations he discussed current developments in the region.

The talks he held with Middle East Quartet Special Envoy Tony Blair focused mainly on the prospects for peace in the region. Both agreed on the need to take advantage of the momentum that had now been generated. Steinmeier commended Blair's active efforts to take the peace process forward. Blair thanked the Minister for Germany's engagement with the region.

On the margins of the General Assembly Steinmeier also discussed the current situation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
