TAKE #1

PALESTINE

The Ad Hoc Committee on Palestine held its first meeting this morning at 11:20 a.m. at Lake Success.

Dr. Oswald Aranba (Brazil) President of the Assembly, took the chair, and invited nominations for the Chairmanship of the Committee.

Mr. Guillermo BELT (Cuba) proposed Dr. H.V. Evatt (Australia).  The nomination was seconded by the representatives of Belgium and France.

Mr. Vladimir Simic (Yugoslavia) opposed this nomination on the grounds that the Chair should be occupied by a Representative of one of the Members of the British Commonwealth.

As, however, no other opposition was expressed, Dr. Oswaldo Aranha called upon Dr. H.V. Evatt to take the Chair.

Dr. Evatt then invited nominations for the vice-chairmanship.

Mr. Henrik Kauffman (Denmark) proposed Prince Subhasvasti SVASTIVAT (Siam) and Mr. C.Setalvad (India) seconded the nomination.

Prince Svastivat was unanimously elected Vice-Chairman.

The Chairman next invited nominations for the office of Rapporteur.

Mr. Hernan SANTA CRUZ (Chile) proposed Mr. THOR THORS (Iceland), and Mr. M.R. SCHEYVEN (Belgium) seconded this nomination.

Mr. Thor Thors was unanimously elected.

The Committee then decided to hear at tomorrow's meeting a statement from the Representative of the Mandatory Power for Palestine, the United Kingdom.

The Committee will reconvene tomorrow, Friday, at 11 a.m.
