Spain condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack on the UNRWA school in Gaza – Spanish MoFAC statement/Non-UN document

OFFICIAL STATEMENT 222

Attack on the United Nations School in Gaza

Spain condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) school in Gaza, which killed at least 17 and injured approximately 200 people, including children and the organisation's personnel. The Government of Spain wishes to express its sympathy to the victims' families and hopes for a quick recovery for the injured.

This very serious incident comes on top of a tragic and growing toll of 800 dead Palestinians and thousands of injured and displaced people, a situation that must be halted with the utmost urgency.

The current conflict is also cause for great alarm among the civilian population in Israel, who have suffered over thirty fatalities among its armed forces and civilian population.

The Government of Spain reiterates that the killing of civilians and humanitarian personnel caused by the current unjustifiable escalation in violence is completely unacceptable.

The Government of Spain reaffirms the conclusions agreed upon by the EU Foreign Affairs Council on 22 July and joins the urgent calls for respect for international humanitarian law, particularly the obligation to avoid harm to civilian population, and to respect the sanctity of United Nations premises.

Spain once again urges an immediate cease-fire leading to a reopening of the negotiation process between the two sides, based on the principle of two states living side by side in peace and security.

Spain confirms once again its support for the diplomatic initiative put forward by the Egyptian government to reach a long-lasting cease-fire, and the efforts of the United Nations General Secretary and international leaders to make progress towards peace.
