2 January Israeli troops shot and injured 6 Palestinians in Gaza City. (Al-Ittihad)

3 January Three young Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli troops in Shati and Jabalia refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. (Al-Ittihad)

4 January Israeli settlers installed seven mobile homes in Al-Tour neighbourhood of East Jerusalem. (Al-Ittihad)

Two young Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops in Beit Lahia. (The Jerusalem Press)

5 January Israeli soldiers shot and killed a young Palestinian in Jabalia refugee camp. (Al-Ittihad)

Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of the Likud Party, the main opposition to the Rabin Government, said that he sees no obligation to honour the PLO-Israel accord if his party returns to power. (The New York Times)

6 January Israeli border police shot and killed a Palestinian student in Shu'afat near Jerusalem. (Al-Ittihad)

Israeli troops shot and injured four Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.  Palestinian youths stoned and smashed the windows of an Israeli bus in Hebron. (The Jerusalem Press)

Israel and the PLO agreed to resume the stalled negotiations on the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and Jericho.  (The Washington Post)

7 January The PLO and Jordan signed an accord on economic cooperation. (The New York Times)

9 January A young Palestinian was killed and six others injured during a clash between two Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip.  Two young Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops in Jenin. (The Jerusalem Press)

10 January Five Palestinians were shot and injured in Gaza City and Ramallah by Israeli troops.  An Israeli military jeep was fired at near Rafah. (TheJerusalem Press)

11 January A molotov bomb was thrown at a military post in Gaza City and two bombs were thrown at a military patrol in Hebron. (The Jerusalem Press)

12 January A report published by "Israeli-Palestinian Physicians", a human rights group, indicates that the infant mortality rate in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is five times higher than the mortality rate in Israel. (TheJerusalem Press)

13 January An agreement on security issues was reached between the PLO and Jordan during a one-day meeting of the Joint Palestinian-Jordanian Security Committee in Amman. (The Jerusalem Press)

Israeli troops shot and injured 5 Palestinian boys (ages 12-15) in Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City.  Three Israeli soldiers were injured after been shot at by Palestinians in an ambush near Hebron. (Al-Attihad)

14 January The PLO Chairman, Yasser Arafat met in Tunis separately with the ambassadors of the U.S.A. and the Russian Republic and handed to them letters to their respective governments accusing Israel of being reluctant to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and Jericho. (Al-Attihad)

During an exchange of fire, Israeli troops fired anti-tank rockets into a house near Hebron killing the four Palestinians who were barricaded in the house.  In Gaza, Israeli troops shot and killed a young Palestinian who stabbed to death a Jewish settler in a military post at the entry of the city. (Al-Ittihad)

15 January Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza City injuring 8 people including 3 children under 13. (Al-Ittihad)

16 January President Clinton of the U.S.A. and President Hafez Assad of Syria met for five hours in Geneva on the Middle East peace negotiations. (The Washington Post)

17 January Four Israeli soldiers were injured after being attacked with  hand  grenades  by  the  Hamas   group   in  Rafah. (Al-Ittihad)

18 January Israeli troops opened fire during clashes with Palestinian demonstrators injuring 9 in Hebron, two in Jenin and two in Gaza City. (Al-Attihad)

19 January Israeli troops shot dead a young Palestinian in Ramallah after he threw a Molotov bomb on the soldiers.  A Palestinian man died in Hebron from wounds sustained earlier by Israeli gunfire.  Three boys in Gaza were shot and injured by Israeli soldiers. (Al-Ittihad)

20 January Three Palestinian children and two Israeli soldiers were injured by a hand grenade which was thrown at a military jeep in Gaza City. (Al-Ittihad)

22 January Yasser Arafat, PLO Chairman and Shimon Peres, Israeli Foreign Minister, met for two hours in Oslo and announced in a brief press conference that they would meet again in a week's time. (Al-Ittihad)

23 January According to Yediot Ahronot, a meeting took place in London between the Israeli Ministers of Foreign Affirs and Energy and Qatar's Foreign Minister, "in an attempt to start direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab Gulf countries".

24 January King Hussein of Jordan met for a confidence-building move with 30 American Jews in Washington. (The New York Times)

The Israeli delegation met separately with Syrian, Jordanian, Palestinian and Lebanese delegations to the Middle East peace negotiations, at a secret location in Washington for the first time since last August (The Washington Post).

Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, met with Egyptian Foreign Minister, Amr Musa, who arrived for a short visit to Israel. (The Jerusalem Press)

25 January Egypt and the PLO signed a five-year economic and technical cooperation agreement in readiness for the time when Palestinians take control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. (Reuters)

Yasser Arafat the PLO Chairman met with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh for the first time since 1990. (The Financial Times)

Two "suspected collaborators" were shot dead by the Hamas group in Gaza City. (The Jerusalem Press)

27 January The Secretary-General, Mr. Boutros-Ghali, opened the first meeting in l994 of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. After the opening, the Committee reelected unanimously the Chairman and the bureau of the Committee. (United Nations Journal 1994/19)

28 January Qatar has confirmed it is negotiating a natural gas deal with Israel worth more than $1 billion. (The Financial Times)

30 January Israeli troops shot and injured 8 Palestinians including 5 boys under 12 years of age in Gaza City. (The Jerusalem Press)

31 January PLO Chairman, Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, concluded an intensive weekend of negotiations in Davos, Switzerland. (The Washington Post)
