Press Release

Palestinian Prime Minister Inaugurates Mobile Health Clinic in Area C

With funds from the Governments of Italy, Belgium and UNDP

Bethlehem – 04 July 2013 – His Excellency Prime Minister Rami Al Hamdallah inaugurated a mobile health clinic to answer emergency health needs of the Area C population in the presence of H.E. Minister of Health Dr Jawad Awwad, H.E. Minister of Local Government Saed Al-Kuni, H.E. Davide La Cecilia Italian Consul General, H.E. Gerard Cockx Belgium Consul General, Mr Dario Franchetti NGO Vento di Terra Representative and Mr Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator.

The clinic aims at improving the Palestinian population’s access to primary healthcare services in Area C through innovative eco-sustainable infrastructure solutions. The establishment of a mobile health clinic that has a minimal-environmental impact, transportable with an alternative folding mechanism will allow for it to reach several communities in the area. In addition, training will be provided to Ministry of Health personnel who will manage clinic and the targeted community hosting the service.

The mobile clinic has been designed by ARCò – Architecture and Cooperation and constructed by Al Amour Industrial and Trading Co. The clinic is a pilot intervention that can be replicated in the form of removable houses, schools and other services in communities with similar challenges. The clinic is also part of the FAIR programme UNDP is jointly implementing in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government. The FAIR is a multi-donor platform aimed at empowering and strengthening national institutions to plan and deliver essential public and social Infrastructure in ‘Area C’ and East Jerusalem.

It is worth noting that ‘Area C’, which constitutes 62% of the West Bank, is totally controlled by Israel, depriving the Palestinian people of access to an area that contains the bulk of Palestinian economic assets. The provision of public health services in Area C is a challenge to Palestinian and other health providers due to access and construction restrictions imposed by the occupation. More than 20% of communities in Area C have limited access to health services.
