Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Speaks to Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman by Telephone
1229-19-08-2011
A telephone conversation took place on August 19 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Avigdor Lieberman.
Lavrov expressed his condolences over the terrorist attacks in southern Israel, which caused human casualties. Resolutely condemning this extremist act, the Minister reaffirmed the immutable position of Russia that there can be no justification for terror or for those who use it as means to achieve their ends. He stressed though that despite the gravity of the crime, it is necessary to exercise restraint and to avoid retaliatory steps from which innocent people may suffer.
During the conversation the two parties underlined the need to consolidate international efforts and cooperation for a decisive fight against terrorist manifestations.
They also touched on some topical issues in the Middle East peace process, particularly in light of the upcoming 66th Session of the UN General Assembly, and in Russian-Israeli relations.
