FIFTY U.N. GUARDS TO GO TO PALESTINE
In response to a request from Count Bernadotte, United Nations Mediator for Palestine, Secretary-General of the United Nations Trygve Lie is sending 50 members of the United Nations guard force from Lake Success to assist the Mediator in supervising the Palestine truce.
The fifty members of the UN force are expected to be used primarily to supervise application of the truce provisions relating to the supply route from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The party of Secretariat guards will leave on Saturday by chartered plane for Cairo, where they will receive instructions and assignments from the Mediator. En route, they will be under the direction of Lieutenant John Cosgrove.
All members of the party are experienced international civil servants with a background of service with the United Nations Secretariat at Headquarters. While on duty in Palestine, they will continue to wear United Nations guard uniforms.
Replacements to fill out the roster of guards required at Headquarters will be recruited on a temporary basis at Lake Success.
