Human Appeal International assists nearly 300 Palestine Refugee Families who fled Syria to Jordan

Human Appeal International, an Emirati NGO based in the Emirate of Ajman, today, in coordination with UNRWA, distributed electric fans to 292 Palestine refugee families who fled Syria to Jordan. The distribution took place in Qaryet Al-Tyebat/ Wihdat , Amman. This donation comes in support of UNRWA’s latest appeal for Syria launched on 7 June and which requested critical humanitarian assistance in the form of food, cash, household items and health services in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Welcoming this contribution, Peter Ford, Representative of the UNRWA Commissioner-General, said: “The great majority of Palestine refugees fleeing Syria are going to Lebanon. However, a significant number of families have made their way to Jordan. This generous donation coming just before the Holy Month of Ramadan will allow a number of them to stay cool during what will surely be a hot and difficult month.“

Human Appeal International and UNRWA launched their first joint project in Gaza in 2012. Under the project, nine additional classrooms were constructed at a school in Gaza City.

Background information

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some five million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 65 million.
