OIC Secretary General discusses Middle East Peace Initiative with the Russian Foreign Minister

 

 

Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu met today 24 September 2007 in New York with the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Mr. Sergei Lavrov, and discussed with him several issues including the Russian relations with the OIC and the International Peace Conference which is intended to be held in the United States next fall.

 

The Secretary General emphasized during the meeting that all the states to the Arab – Israeli Conflict should participate in the conference, that the conference should lead to concrete results which can lead to peace in the region, and that the Palestinians should be able to establish their independent state in the 1967 territories with Jerusalem as its capital.

 

On his part, Mr. Lavrov conveyed to Prof. Ihsanoglu that in his last meeting with the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, he was informed that all member states of the Arab League would be invited to the peace conference, including Lebanon and Syria. He said that the US position is clearer now with regard to the peace conference, especially vis-à-vis the issue of the Palestinian State.

 

            Both, Secretary General and the Russian Foreign Minister called on the Palestinian leaderships to put their difference aside, to unify their position, and to cooperate together towards the establishment of their independent Palestinian state.
