General Assembly President confers with Bahraini leader on Middle East

13 April 2010 –General Assembly President Ali Treki, on the final leg of a four-nation Middle East tour, today discussed the Arab-Israeli conflict with Bahraini Prime Minister Khalifa ibn Salman Al Khalifah.

“They voiced serious concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, and the political stalemate between the parties to the conflict,” the President’s spokesperson Jean-Victor Nkolo said, noting that the two officials underscored the need for swift reconciliation between the Palestinian factions.

They also reaffirmed their call for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and exchanged views on the situation in Iraq following the recent elections, voicing the hope that national unity and reconciliation would be achieved.

Dr. Treki, who has already visited Syria, Yemen and Kuwait on this trip, is due to meet with Bahrain’s King Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa tomorrow.
