Japan donates US$ 516,224 to UNRWA Lebanon
Beirut – October 09, 2007 The government of Japan has donated US$ 516,224 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in support of preventive healthcare projects.
UNRWA equipped its health centers with 11 ultrasound machines for the diagnosis and early management of any pregnant-related abnormalities. These machines contribute to the reduction of pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality from preventable causes.
In addition, the Japanese donation was used by UNRWA to provide 7 health centers with chemistry analyzers and hematology cell counters for reliable, fast and automated analysis of patients’ health condition.
The agency also conducted training for its health staff on the use of these machines and equipment.
Japan is one of UNRWA’s major donors that has contributed in 2006 US$ 2,721,342 to the General Fund, and US$ 1000,000 in projects. It has continuously and proactively extended humanitarian assistance to Palestine Refugees since 1953 and has always shown great support to human resource development.
