Business Women’s Committee of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce gives SYP 3.3 million to Gaza children
Damascus, 9 September 2009
The Business Women’s Committee today presented a cheque for SYP 3.3 million to UNRWA to support Palestine refugee children in Gaza. These funds were raised through a fashion show organised in cooperation with Turkish designer, Rabia yalçın.
Lisa Gilliam, Acting Director of UNRWA Affairs in Syria expressed her appreciation to Mr. Ghassan Qalla', Head of Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, and to Ms. Sonya Khanji, President of the Women’s Committee.
"I am very grateful to the Business Women’s Committee for this timely and generous gesture. The children of Gaza are in dire need of such support."
UNRWA has found that many children attend school on empty stomachs and without proper supplies. Therefore, the Committee’s donation will provide much-needed food and stationery to ensure children can function productively in school.
UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to over four million registered refugees living in Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.
