Mideast situation/Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

Letter dated 23 April 1990 from the Permanent Representative of

Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, and further to our previous letters concerning Israeli practices in Lebanon, I have the honour to inform you that on 9 April last, the Israeli occupation forces and the militias subordinate to them demolished the government elementary school in the village of At-Tiri in the occupied zone of southern Lebanon.  The engineering unit attached to the militias evacuated 150 pupils from the school before blowing it up and causing a large conflagration which the Irish contingent of UNIFIL hastened to extinguish.

The Lebanese Government, which strongly condemns the Israeli act of aggression, calls the attention of international public opinion, as represented by the United Nations, to the fact that Israeli practices in breach of international law and custom, which are in defiance of the most elementary principles of human rights, have reached the extent of violating the basic right of village children to education.

Lebanon urges the international community to take speedy action to halt these inhuman Israeli practices.

I should be grateful it you would have this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under item 35 of the preliminary list, and of the Security Council.

(Signed)  Khalil MAKKAWI
