Letter dated 28 August 1989 from the Deputy Permanent Representative
and Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Lebanon to
the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General
On instructions from my Government and further to our previous letters relating to Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, I regret to inform you that, at 6.45 p.m. on Sunday, 27 August 1989, four Israeli warplanes carried out an attack on the village of Ain Bossoir in the Touffah region in southern Lebanon and the surrounding area. This resulted in the death of four citizens and the wounding of six others, some of them children. At the same time, the Israeli forces proceeded to shell the area in order to prevent civil defence personnel from extinguishing the fires and removing the casualties.
This new Israeli attack constitutes a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and a defiance of international laws and customs and, in particular, the principles of the United Nations and the International Bill of Human Rights.
I request that this letter be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under item 37 of the provisional agenda, and of the Security Council.
(Signed) Chawki CHOUERI
Deputy Permanent Representative
and Chargé d'affaires a.i.
