Mideast situation/attack – Letter from Israel

Letter dated 21 October 1986 from the Permanent Representative of Israel

to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

Further to my letter dated 17 October 1986 (A/41/724-5/18413), I have been asked by my Government to inform you that the Israeli authorities have apprehended the three individuals who carried out the recent attack at the Western Wall.

They were recruited by Arafat's Fatah wing of the PLO and trained in a Fatah camp in Jordan in December 1985 (before the rift between Jordan and the PLO).  Their instructions were to carry out a mass killing in a crowded holy site, such as the Western Wall, Mount Zion or the Mount of Olives. Twenty-five victims of the attack are still hospitalized, one of them in critical condition. As stated in my earlier letter, the PLO officially claimed responsibility for the attack in its statement from Cairo.

I have the honour to request that this letter be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 37, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Benjamin NETANYAHU

Ambassador
