Letter dated 29 May 2001 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon

to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to inform you that, on 27 May 2001, Israel installed an observation post 20 metres inside Lebanese territory in the vicinity of Ghajar village, overlooking the Wazzani spring. The post is manned by not less than two soldiers on a permanent basis.

My Government urges you to take the necessary measures to have the observation post removed by Israel on the grounds that it constitutes a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and of the relevant United Nations resolutions.

I should be grateful if you would have this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 40, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Sélim Tadmoury
