Mideast situation/Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

LED 13 APRIL 1996 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE

OF LEBANON TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENT

OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL

Upon instructions from my Government, I have the honour to request Your Excellency to convene an urgent meeting of the Security Council to consider the grave situation in Lebanon resulting from the large-scale Israeli bombardment of many towns and villages in my country, including the southern suburb of Beirut, causing alarming numbers of civilian dead and wounded, thousands of displaced persons and severe damage to property.  These acts of aggression are continuing unabated for the third consecutive day.  They constitute further flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon and the Charter of the United Nations and pose a great threat to international peace and security.

(Signed)  Samir MOUBARAK

Ambassador

Permanent Representative
