Jerusalem/Settlements – GA emergency session/SecGen report – Letter from Iran

Letter dated 11 July 1997 from the Permanent Representative of

Iran to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly

Upon instructions from my Government and with reference to paragraph 13 (g) of document A/ES-10/6-S/1997/494 of 26 June 1997, I have the honour to state the following:

1. The Islamic Republic of Iran categorically denies the charges levelled against it by the representative of the Israeli regime.  As a victim of international terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Iran has, on numerous occasions, condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and called for genuine cooperation, at the international level, to combat this menace.

2. It is public knowledge that Israel resorts to terrorism as a tool for advancing its expansionist agenda.  Continued harassment of Palestinians in the occupied territories, kidnapping and abduction of innocent civilians in Lebanon as well as physical elimination of Palestinian activists are but a few examples of terrorist activities of Israel.

3. The international community, particularly the United Nations, should reject the illegitimate policies of the Israeli regime, including attempts to cover up its own illegal actions through such diversionary propaganda tactics as accusing others.

It would be highly appreciated if the present letter were circulated as an official document of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly, under agenda item 5, and of the Security Council.

(Signed)  Kamal KHARRAZI
