Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4555th and 4558th meetings, held on 19 and 21 June 2002, respectively, in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (S/2002/618).
At the 4555th meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Jacques Paul Klein, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Coordinator of United Nations Operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the 4558th meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.
The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S/2002/680) that had been prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations.
The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S/2002/680, and adopted it unanimously as resolution 1418 (2002) (for the text, see S/RES/1418 (2002); to be issued in Official Records of the Security Council, Fifty-seventh Year, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 2002).

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4556th (private) meeting, held on 20 June 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.
At the close of the meeting, in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the following communiqué was issued through the Secretary-General in place of a verbatim record:
“At its 4556th meeting, held in private on 20 June 2002, the Security Council considered the item entitled ‘The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question’.
“The Secretary-General and the members of the Council had a constructive discussion.”

The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4557th meeting, held on 21 June 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.
The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Afghanistan, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.
In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Kieran Prendergast, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.
