QUESTION OF THE VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE

OCCUPIED ARAB TERRITORIES, INCLUDING PALESTINE

Human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan

Report by the Secretary-General

1.   At its fifty-eighth session, the Commission on Human Rights adopted resolution 2002/6, entitled “Human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan”. In paragraph 6 of the resolution, the Commission requested the Secretary-General to bring that resolution to the attention of all Governments, the competent United Nations organs, the specialized agencies, regional intergovernmental organizations and international humanitarian organizations and to give it the widest possible publicity, and to report to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-ninth session.

2.   In accordance with this request, the Secretary-General, in a note verbale dated 10 June 2002, brought resolution 2002/6 to the attention of all Governments. It was also communicated to the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories and to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

3.   Furthermore, the resolution was transmitted to all the specialized agencies and to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. In addition, the resolution was brought to the attention of competent regional intergovernmental organizations and international humanitarian organizations.

4.   The Department of Public Information undertook the following activities:

 (a)   The revised and updated publication of the Department, The Question of Palestine and the United Nations , includes extensive references to the reports of the Special Committee, including sections dealing with questions of human rights, settlements and refugees. The book, which was recently cleared for publication, is now being processed and should soon be available for distribution. Sections of the book will be posted on the United Nations home page;

 (b)   The reports of the Committee were extensively covered by the Department in its daily news coverage. The debates of the Commission on Human Rights and at the General Assembly, referring to the reports, were covered in press releases (English and French) as well as in the United Nations home page;

 (c)   Electronic copies of the reports of the Special Committee are made available to the public by the Department’s Public Inquiries Unit upon request and to the delegations by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.
