Middle East situation/Lebanon – Letter from Palestine

Letter dated 21 March 1989 from the Charge d'affaires a.i.of the

Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations addressed

to the Secretary-General

I am instructed by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which has the powers and responsibilities of the Provisional Government of Palestine, to bring the following to your immediate attention.

On 20 March 1989, the Israeli air force bombed the area of Bar-Ilyas, in Al-Beka'a, Lebanon, resulting in 15 killed and 30 injured. At least half of the reported casualties are Palestinians.

We believe that such attacks by Israel not only constitute a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon, but also demonstrate Israel's insistence in undermining peace efforts in the region and its determination to continue its aggressive policies towards the Palestinian people.

We should be grateful if you would arrange to have the text of the present letter circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under items 37, 39 and 78 of the preliminary list, and of the Security Council.

(Signed)  Dr. M. Nasser AL-KIDWA

Alternate Permanent Observer

Charge d'affaires a.i. of

Palestine to the United Nations
