Illegal Israeli actions in OPT – Letter from Palestine

Identical letters dated 21 June 2002 from the Permanent Observer of

Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

and the President of the Security Council

Committing yet additional human rights violations, war crimes and State terrorism against the Palestinian people, Israeli occupying forces fired tank shells at a marketplace in Jenin, killing four Palestinians, including three children. The children were two brothers, ages 6 and 12, and a 6-year-old girl. In addition to those killed, at least 24 Palestinians were injured; 6 of them are in critical condition. Also in Jenin, Israeli occupying forces blew up a building, which caused the adjacent house to collapse, instantly killing a 14-year-old boy.

Furthermore, in Southern Gaza City, Israeli soldiers also opened fire at a group of Palestinian children, killing a 10-year-old boy. An eight-year-old boy was also killed by Israeli tank fire while he was in his home in Gaza. Also today, armed Israeli settlers committed additional settler terrorism, entering the village of Howara, near Nablus, killing a Palestinian civilian while setting Palestinian homes and cars ablaze. Yesterday, 20 June 2002, a pregnant Palestinian woman, a mother of three, was killed by Israeli tank fire in Qalqilya while in her home.

Israeli occupying forces widened its reoccupation of areas under Palestinian Authority in implementation of the new government policy dubbed “determined road”. In addition to Jenin, Israeli tanks and armoured vehicles reoccupied parts of Bethlehem, Qalqilya, Tulkarem and the southern Ramallah suburb of Beitunia.
