Mideast situation/Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

LETTER DATED 25 MARCH 1980 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF

LEBANON TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE

SECURITY COUNCIL

Pursuant to my letter dated 21 March 1980 (S/13852), I wish to draw your attention to the continuing shelling by Israeli forces of south Lebanon.

On 24 March 1980, the Norwegian sector was subjected to an artillery barrage, with one shell, at least, impacting on a field hospital.  Fortunately there were no casualties.

On the same day, the villages of Suhmor and Juhmor were shelled at 0610 hours.  At 1910 hours, Sidon was targeted by Israeli gunners.

The coastal city of Tyre was shelled by Israeli naval vessels at 2000 hours for 20 minutes.  This is the third time, in recent days, Tyre is shelled from the sea, which is a clear indication that, contrary to some reports, it is not the so-called “de facto forces” that are aggressing the area – since no source has yet attributed to the said forces any possession of naval vessels.

You are kindly requested to have this letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.

(Signed) Ghassan TUENI

Ambassador

Permanent Representative
