Letter dated 29 March 2005 from the Secretary-General to the President of the Security Council
I have the honour to refer to paragraph 34 of my report to the Security Council dated 20 July 2000 (S/2000/718), in which I expressed my intention to appoint a senior official to be based in Beirut and help coordinate United Nations activities with regard to southern Lebanon.
I have now decided to appoint Geir O. Pedersen to undertake the corresponding function, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, as my Personal Representative for southern Lebanon. He will be succeeding Staffan de Mistura, who has been appointed as my Deputy Special Representative for Iraq. Mr. Pedersen will be working in close coordination with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and will take up his new assignment in Beirut in the near future.
(Signed) Kofi A. Annan
