SecGen and SecCo President statements on Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

Identical letters dated 12 January 2005 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council

  On the instructions of my Government, and with reference to press statement SC/8289 issued by the President of the Security Council, dated 11 January 2005, and with reference also to the Secretary-General’s press release SG/SM/9669, dated 10 January 2005, I have the honour to make the following clarifications.

  Concerning the press statement by the President of the Security Council,

 (a)   “The legal attack by Hizbollah” that the press statement refers to in its first paragraph was, in fact, a roadside explosive device attributed to Hizbollah;

 (b)   This roadside explosive device was against an “Israeli patrol” in the Lebanese Shaba’a farms that are occupied by Israel and followed an Israeli attack on 7 January 2005 against two Lebanese civilians and their civilian vehicle across the Blue Line, on the Lebanese side, in the outskirts of the village of Meis El-Jabal.

  Concerning the Secretary-General’s press release, I would like to reiterate that the roadside explosive device attributed to Hizbollah was located in the Lebanese Shaba’a farms and not on the Israeli side of the Blue Line.

  I request to have the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council and of the General Assembly, under agenda item 36.

( Signed) Sami Kronfol

Ambassador

Permanent Representative
