Request by Venezuela to become member – Letter by the Chair of CEIRPP, Note Verbale by Venezuela

Letter dated 23 August 2010 from the Chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People addressed to the President of the General Assembly

I have the honour to inform you that, by a note verbale dated 15 June 2010 addressed to the Chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (see annex), the Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expressed interest in that country’s becoming a member of the Committee, to which it had already been granted observer status.

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, at its 325th meeting, held on 20 August 2010, welcomed this decision by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and approved its request. In the view of the Committee, this reflects the growing international support for its efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the question of Palestine.

In view of the above, and since the membership of the Committee has been established by the General Assembly, I have the honour to request that you bring the matter to the attention of the Assembly for its approval.

(Signed) Paul Badji
Chair
Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights
of the Palestinian People

Note verbale dated 15 June 2010 from the Permanent Mission of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela addressed to the Chair of
the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People

I have the honour to address His Excellency on the occasion of referring to the status of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, over which you honourably preside.

Historically, Venezuela has opposed the continued occupation of the Palestinian Territories by the State of Israel and has advocated in favour of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East. We remain convinced of the need to raise public international awareness on the plight of the Palestinian people and are committed to helping on this critical endeavour.

In view of this commitment and the particular interest of the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on the Palestinian issue, I am writing to His Excellency to communicate our interest in becoming a full member of the Committee and express in advance my gratitude to His Excellency for putting this request through the established practice and procedures.
