Letter dated 4 August 2000 from the Secretary-General

addressed to the President of the Security Council

I have the honour to refer to paragraph 34 of my report to the Security Council dated 20 July 2000 (S/2000/718) in which I expressed my intention to appoint a senior official to be based in Beirut and help coordinate United Nations activities with regard to the south of Lebanon.

I have now decided to appoint Rolf G. Knutsson to undertake the corresponding functions, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, as my Personal Representative for Southern Lebanon. Mr. Knutsson, who will be working in close coordination with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larsen, will take up his assignment in Beirut as soon as possible for an initial period of six months.

(Signed) Kofi A. Annan
