Letter dated 14 May 2001 from the Permanent Representative

of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to inform you that Israel carried out the following attacks on Lebanon on 9 May 2001.

Between 1420 and 1430 hours three Israeli mortar rounds landed near the centre of Shahl, outside Birkat al-Naqqar, in Shab`a, Hasbayya district.

At 1445 hours two Israeli mortar rounds landed in the Jabal as-Sawwanah area between Shab`a and Kfar Shuba, Hasbayya district, in the liberated areas.

Israeli mortar rounds also landed in the vicinity of Birkat al-Naqqar in Shab`a, Hasbayya district, in the liberated areas. These Israeli attacks, compounding the daily sorties into Lebanese airspace perpetrated by Israeli aircraft, constitute a flagrant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, the blue line and international law.

I should be grateful if you would have this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 40, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Selim Tadmoury
Ambassador
