Situation in the OPT – Letter from Palestine

Letter dated 31 December 1990 from the Chargé d'affaires a.i.

of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the

United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

I am instructed by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which has the powers and responsibilities of the Provisional Government of Palestine, to bring the following to your immediate attention:

Over the week end, the Israeli occupying forces committed a new massacre against the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967, including Jerusalem.

According to our information, the Israeli forces shot and killed nine Palestinians, and injured around three hundred during two days of indiscriminate shooting against Palestinian masses celebrating the Anniversary of Palestinian Revolution, especially in Rafah, Gaza and Khan Younis.

In the light of such dangerous escalation of the Israeli oppression against the Palestinian civilians, we believe that the international community represented by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council has to act immediately in order to protect the Palestinian people and to implement relevant Security Council resolutions, the most recent of which is resolution 681 (1990).

I should be grateful if you would arrange to have the text of this letter circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under agenda items 23, 35 and 77, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Dr. Nasser AL-KIDWA

Alternate Permanent Observer of

Palestine to the United Nations

Chargé d'affaires a.i.
