Letter dated 7 January 2009 from the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has the honour to send you its greetings and to request your personal intervention with the members of the Security Council to demand a cessation of hostilities and stabilization of the situation in Gaza. It likewise requests your full support for the reconvening of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly on illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, in accordance with resolution ES-10/17 of 15 December 2006 and resolution 377 of 3 November 1950, “Uniting for Peace”, which states in its first paragraph that, because of lack of unanimity in the Security Council and its resulting inability to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to maintaining and restoring international peace and security.
(Signed) Julio Escalona
