Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip – Letter from Egypt

Letter dated 14 November 2012 from the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council

I write to you today, in your capacity as President of the Security Council for the month of November 2012, to express my Government’s grave concern regarding the Israeli military operation against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The ongoing unlawful military operation by the occupying Power that includes extrajudicial killings, causing loss of life and destruction, demands the urgent attention of the international community, in particular the Council, to address this alarming situation that threatens international peace and security.

Upon instructions from my Government, and in accordance with Article 35 of the United Nations Charter, I have the honour to request an urgent meeting of the Security Council to consider the ongoing unlawful Israeli military operation against the Palestinian people, and to assume its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security by taking all necessary measures to stop this aggression immediately.

I shall be grateful if you would arrange to have the present letter made available to the members of the Security Council and to have it distributed as a document of the Council, in connection with the item entitled “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question”.
