Air violations across the Blue Line – PRSG statement – Press release

Press Release

28 Israeli air violations of the Blue Line:

PRSG expresses deep regret over intensified air violations

Beirut, 18 December 2001 (UN Information Centre) – The Blue Line was violated repeatedly yesterday by Israeli military aircraft which flew over cities in southern Lebanon and deeper into Lebanese airspace. Israeli jets were heard over Tyre, Sidon, Beirut and the Bekaa. Sonic booms were also heard.

There were 28 air violations of the Blue Line on 17 December, consisting of 35 jets and 5 helicopters, the latter of which flew over southern Lebanon at low altitude. This substantial and sudden increase followed the two air violations which occurred on 16 December.

The Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for Southern Lebanon, Mr . Staffan de Mistura, calls upon the Israeli authorities to cease such violations of the Blue Line.

As the PRSG has stated on previous occasions, there is never any justification for any violation of the Blue Line.  Moreover, one violation cannot justify another.  There is therefore clearly a need for restraint at a time of high tension in the region.
