The CHAIRMAN explained that the Commission had convened the present meeting for the purpose of advising the Israeli delegation verbally that it had received the Israeli Government’s letter, transmitted by Mr. Eban, and hoped to reply to it in the course of the next week. He asked the Israeli delegation to inform its Government that the Commission would reply in writing after studying the question more fully.
The Chairman also recalled that the Commission had asked the Israeli delegation to communicate with Tel Aviv regarding the Declaration on protection of the Holy Places outside the Jerusalem area. Since the Commission must send a letter to the Secretary-General for transmission to the General Assembly, setting forth the replies of both the Israeli and Arab delegations or the question, and since that letter should be submitted in the course of the following week, he hoped a reply would be forthcoming promptly from the Government of Israeli.
Mr. Lourie expressed his satisfaction at the opportunity of resuming contact with the Commission, and was confident that a reply would be received from his Government without delay on the matter of the Holy Places.
The meeting rose at 10:45 a.m.
