Palestine question/Truce violation – Letter from SecCo Truce Commission – Addendum


LETTER DATED 10 JULY 1948 FROM THE ACTING UNITED STATES

REPRESENTATIVE TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL CONTAINING

A MESSAGE FROM THE UNITED STATES MEMBER OF THE TRUCE COMMISSION

With further reference to the message concerning the King David Hotel in Jerusalem transmitted by this Government to the Security Council on behalf of the Truce Commission (document S/877, 9 July 1948), the United States Department of State has been informed by the United States Member of the United Nations Truce Commission in Jerusalem to the following effect:

"On the morning of July 9 a meeting was held with the Military Commander of Jewish Jerusalem, the Chairman of the Emergency Committee of Jewish Jerusalem, other Jewish Military Officers, the Truce Commission Chairman, and an American United Nations Observer, Colonel Begley.  Agreement was reached that the King David Hotel would be given up by the United Nations at 1200 hours July 9, and that possession would be taken by Haganah on condition that United Nations would regain possession if circumstances should permit the return of United Nations.  The Chairman and the United States Member of the Truce Commission will remove the United Nations flag at 1200 hours.  According to agreement with Haganah, the hotel will not be occupied by Haganah until 1200 hours on July 9."
